KMRU – "Kin"
Ambient, noise, post-rock deflagrations. KMRU’s most visceral record yet. Play it loud.

Joseph Kamaru, Nairobi born and Berlin based, is a singular presence in ambient music since Peel landed in 2020 on Editions Mego. Kin, its follow-up on the same label, is not a sequel but carries the weight of everything that happened in between, including the death of Peter Rehberg, Mego’s founder, to whom the record is dedicated. Where Peel seduced quietly, Kin pushes into noisier, more abrasive territory: distortions rooted in his early guitar playing, frozen expanses of drone, shadowy melancholic clouds cutting straight to the bone. Bewitching, best experienced at high volume. The closing By Absence is the record’s phenomenal centrepiece: post-rock grandeur in the vein of Mogwai, a sonic detonation not unlike My Bloody Valentine at their most devastating. A new palette, brilliantly explored.
